আধুনিক যুগের সাথে তাল মিলিয়ে চলার জন্য সৌখিন নারী-পুরুষেরা বিভিন্ন ডিজাইনের কাপড় পরার প্রতি আগ্রহী। তাই পোশাক কেনার পাশাপাশি তারা দর্জির কাছ থেকে নিজের ইচ্ছা অনুযায়ী মাপ ও ডিজাইন দিয়ে বিভিন্ন পোশাক তৈরি করে নেয়। এ কারণে কাপড় সেলাই বা দর্জির চাহিদা সব সময়ই থাকে। কাপড় সেলাই শুরুর আগে দক্ষতা অর্জন করা অবশ্যই প্রয়োজন। পোশাক / বস্ত্র হচ্ছে আমাদের মৌলিক চাহিদার মধ্যে অন্যতম। আমরা যে সব পোশাক পরিধান করি, তার বেশির ভাগই কেটে সেলাই করা। সাধারণ ভাবে পোশাক বলতে সেলাই করা কাপড়কেই বুঝানো হয়ে থাকে। বর্তমানে আধুনিক যুগের সাথে তাল মিলিয়ে চলার জন্য সৌখিন নারী-পুরুষেরা বিভিন্ন ডিজাইনের কাপড় পরার প্রতি আগ্রহী। তাই পোশাক কেনার পাশাপাশি তারা দর্জির কাছ থেকে নিজের ইচ্ছা অনুযায়ী মাপ ও ডিজাইন দিয়ে বিভিন্ন পোশাক তৈরি করে নেয়। এ কারণে কাপড় সেলাই বা দর্জির চাহিদা সব সময়ই থাকে। পোশাক তৈরি একটা শিল্প এবং এই পেশায় নিয়োজিত শিল্পীদেরকে দর্জি বলা হয়। অন্যের অর্ডার অনুযায়ী পোশাক তৈরি করে দিয়ে তার বিনিময়ে মজুরি নেওয়া যায়। এছাড়া তৈরি পোশাক বিক্রয় করেও আয় করা যায়। আমাদের দেশে অন্যান্য বড় শিল্পের মধ্যে পোষাক শিল্প অন্যতম। পোশাক তৈরির কৌশল শেখার মাধ্যমে বিভিন্ন পোশাক কারখানায় কাজ করে আয় করা সম্ভব। কাপড় সেলাইয়ের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় স্থায়ী উপকরণ কিনতে আনুমানিক ৫১২৫-৫৪৯২ টাকার প্রয়োজন হবে। এছাড়া কাপড় সেলাইয়ের জন্য প্রাথমিক ভাবে কাঁচামাল কেনার জন্য ৩১ থেকে ৩৯ টাকার প্রয়োজন হবে। দোকান করতে ঘর ভাড়া নেওয়ার জন্য আলাদা টাকার প্রয়োজন হবে। দোকান ঘরের ভাড়া স্থানভেদে কম বেশি হয়। যদি ব্যক্তিগত পূঁজি না থাকে তাহলে মূলধন সংগ্রহের জন্য নিকট আত্মীয়স্বজন, ঋণদানকারী ব্যাংক (সোনালীব্যাংক, জনতা ব্যাংক , রূপালী ব্যাংক, অগ্রণী ব্যাংক, বাংলাদেশ কৃষি ব্যাংক) বা বেসরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠানের (আশা, গ্রামীণ ব্যাংক, ব্রাক, প্রশিকা) সাথে যোগাযোগ করা যেতে পারে। এসব সরকারি, বেসরকারি ব্যাংক ও বেসরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান (এনজিও) শর্ত সাপেক্ষে ঋণ দিয়ে থাকে। কাপড় সেলাই শুরুর আগে দক্ষতা অর্জন করা অবশ্যই প্রয়োজন। তাই কাপড় কাটা ও সেলাইয়ে দক্ষতা অর্জনের জন্য প্রশিক্ষণ নিতে হবে। অভিজ্ঞ কারও সহকারী হিসেবে কিছুদিন কাজ করার মধ্য দিয়েও হাতে কলমে প্রশিক্ষণ নেওয়া সম্ভব। এছাড়া বিসিক, যুব উন্নয়ন অধিদপ্তর, মহিলা বিষয়ক অধিদপ্তরের সেলাই প্রশিক্ষণ শাখায় যোগাযোগ করে অর্থের বিনিময়ে প্রশিক্ষণ নেওয়া সম্ভব।
