FlashCards For JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN Flash Cards
Journeyman electricians are electricians who have acquired the training and experience necessary to work independently, but who have not attained licensure as master electricians. You may work with electrical wires, fixtures and control systems in commercial, industrial and residential buildings, but typically do not design the initial electrical system for a building, which is usually done by a master electrician. As a journeyman electrician, you could install lighting and security systems or connect transformers, circuit breakers, switches and outlets. You may also inspect and test the integrity of existing wiring systems and supervise the work of apprentices.
There is no national license; some municipalities require city licenses. In order to obtain this certification, you must take the Journeyman Electrician Exam which is administered by local building departments. To sign up to take the test, contact your local building department. Ask the building department for a blue print of the exam, which will provide information about the number and type of questions on the exam and how much time you will have to complete the exam. The blue print may also inform you of what score is needed to pass the exam. Exams typically have open and closed book portions and allow the use of the National Electrical Code Book where indicated. Some jurisdictions allow the use of tabbed NEC books. The journeyman electrician exams are usually held at governmental offices or local community colleges. Once you qualify to take the test and sign up for it, the local building department will inform you where and when the test will be conducted
In general, a journeyman electrician is expected to have a basic understanding of low voltage systems and wiring in residential, commercial and other settings, as well as be able to:
Read blue prints
Run electrical lines
Wire or terminate devices
Perform quality control tests
Install electrical systems
Review construction plans and drawings for accuracy
Determine layouts and decide the cost and type of materials necessary for a project
Retrofit electrical systems with current technology and improve performance and efficiency
Troubleshoot electrical systems
State exams will also include questions about laws and regulations specific to the state
