To start, towels have different purposes from different fabrics, whether they dry your body or your plate. Things to remember are:

Absorption is made by maximizing the surface area. A nice cotton towel for hands and body, where a nice cloth towel for plates and glass equipment.

Terry is the most absorbent. This is an ideal towel for hands and body because it is circular on both sides, thus adding to the surface area.

The combination of fabric, cotton, and rayon is great for drying dishes. This helps improve the evaporation ratio.

Silk fabrics work well for drying glass, and dishes where there is no cloth in the drying out.

Fabrics made from flax are very absorbent and strong. It's bacteria resistant, and will not leave the rest of the fabric in the glass device, soaking up 20% of its weight.
