Typically, tailor's chalk is best for this. Then you'll need to take each denim strip and sew right down the center. For best results, use a needle specific for denim. An awl is also necessary which will help pleat the fabric. Once you're ready to move on, you'll need to continue sewing two more rows of stitches along the sides. Allow 1/8 inch seam and this will help create flat strips.

The spiral shape of the brooch is hand sewn on. Make sure to add a safety pin to the back of the design, so you can simply add it on to whatever you like.
