Learn all about Epilepsy from this audio book.
Epilepsy is one of the most misunderstood forms of illness. It is a fairly common disorder affecting up to 3 million Americans. However, many people still don’t know what epilepsy is or how to treat people with epilepsy. The major symptom of epilepsy is a seizure, and this is such a scary experience for both the afflicted person and the people around them, that the many people have trouble coping. For people affected by this disease, this ignorance can magnify the fear and emotional stress that they already
experience.
So, what is epilepsy? Basically, epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures. Seizures are periods of abnormal behavior, when the person with epilepsy is not him- or herself. They are caused by abnormal electrical activity inside the person’s brain.
Epilepsy usually has no permanent effects whatsoever on the person’s mental capacity. Despite the popular image of an epileptic person thrashing around on the floor and foaming at the mouth, seizures can take many different forms. For example, sometimes the person may not move at all, and seem to go into a brief trance from which they cannot be roused. Anyone who has two or more seizures that are not caused by a separate physical disorder may be diagnosed with epilepsy.
For someone who has just received a diagnosis of epilepsy, the news can be devastating. Seizures can be terrifying events - it is never pleasant to lose your sense of yourself and your self-control. However, even though epilepsy is a chronic condition, it is not necessarily a disabling one. There are ways to manage it and decrease the possibility of having a seizure. For some people, the seizures will eventually stop, even to the point where treatment is no longer needed.
This book will help you understand what epilepsy is, what causes it, and the different treatment options available for you. Once you understand the disease more fully, you will realize that the diagnosis of epilepsy does not have to keep you prisoner. There is hope, so don’t give up!
