關於COUPLES THERAPY

一個婚姻治療指南對於人們在惡劣的關係,這需要技巧和建議

Even the strongest couples run into tough times and sticky challenges. After all, when you put two people together who come from different backgrounds, with different values, different opinions, different goals, and different likes and dislikes, well, there are going to be some bumps along the way.

For some couples, the bumps are relatively small or infrequent. Getting over, through, or around them is a task they’re able to handle while incurring only minor emotional scrapes and bruises. Other couples, however, aren’t so fortunate. The challenges they face are bigger, more chronic, or so unexpected that their relationship begins to crumble. Some relationships completely crash and burn while others erode gradually.

That’s when many couples come to a fork in the road: throw in the towel and go their separate ways or do whatever they can (on their own or with help) to salvage their relationship and find a way to move forward (and, hopefully, become stronger than before).

This is where couples therapy usually comes into the picture. Couples typically seek therapy when 1) their relationship is in a crisis and they realize they need some outside help and 2) they still see at least a glimmer of light at the end of the very dark tunnel they’ve found themselves in. However, some couples seek therapy knowing they’re going to split up, but they want to make sure they do it in the most amicable way possible.

Couples therapy is just what it sounds like – two people in an intimate (or what was once an intimate) relationship working with a skilled therapist & reading up self help guides / books in an attempt to effectively address and hopefully resolve the problems, issues, and weaknesses in their relationship. Sometimes the term “couples therapy” is used interchangeably with marriage counseling or marital therapy, although not everyone in couples therapy is married. In that regard, the term couples therapy has a slightly broader scope although the general premise is essentially the same despite the label.

Couples therapy can be useful for all types of couples – heterosexual couples, homosexual couples, transgender couples, married couples, engaged couples, and couples who aren’t married.

Couples therapy has saved many marriages and relationships. It can be highly effective in helping two people work through their issues and restore the harmony that has fizzled.

It can be helpful to think of the therapy process as similar to treating a nasty wound – a wound that isn’t healing because it’s become infected. Until the wound is opened up and cleaned thoroughly – which is the most painful part of the process – it won’t start to heal.
