The Sumatran Tiger is known in the smallest classifications as a group of nine subspecies, including the Sumatran, which can weigh around 260 pounds and grows about 8 feet in length. When considering these nine subspecies, Siberian Tigers are the largest in this group. Unfortunately, the nine subspecies, including Sumatran and Caspian, are now classified as extinct. The mainland tigers now comprise populations of Bengal, Malayan, Indochinese, and Amur (Siberian) tigers, whereas the Caspian Tiger is extirpated from the wild.

Since 2017, IUCN has recognized two tiger subspecies, generally called the mainland tigers and the Sunda Island tigers. It is proposed that the only valid tiger subspecies are recognized, that is, P. Tigris on the Asian continent, and P. t. spondaic on the Sunda islands. Although most classifications divide the species into six subspecies, some merged the subspecies, or suggested two tigers existed, P. Tigris in mainland Asia, and P. sondaica of Java, Bali, and Sumatra. The authors suggest the recognition of just two subspecies, that is, P. Tigris comprises Bengal, Malayan, Indochinese, southern Chinese, Siberian, and Caspian tigers populations, while P. t. sondaica comprises Javan, Bali, and Sumatran populations.

Tigers are animals found throughout south and southeast Asia and the eastern parts of Russia and southern China. Tigers inhabit different habitats including marshes, prairies, and hardwood and mangrove forests. Tigers are rarely far from water sources; there are Bengal Tigers living in the moist mangrove forests along the Ganges river in India.

Tigers are the largest cat species, reaching an overall length up to 3.38 meters (11.1 feet) in curves, and weighing up to 388.7 kilograms (857 pounds) in the wild. Tiger, (Panthera tigris), is the largest member of the cat family (Felidae), rivaled only in power and fierceness by the lion (Panthera leo). In 2008, Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute joined with the World Bank Group and Global Environmental Facility to launch the Global Tiger Initiative, designed to stabilize and rebuild wild tiger populations in order to save the species from extinction. The Wildlife Conservation Society and Panthera Corporation formed a partnership, Tigers Forever, whose working sites included the largest remaining tiger reserve in the world, Hukaung Valley, which is 21 756 kilometers (8,400 sq mi) deep in Burma.
