The definition of shellfish is general and has no biological meaning, but its use is widespread and is used in economic activities.

In the broadest sense, clams mean any mollusk with a pair of shells (see Bivalvia). With this understanding, it is more appropriate to call it shellfish and is equivalent to the meaning of clam used in America. An example of such usage can be seen in the term "handicraft from shells".

The word shell can also mean all shells that live attached to an object. These include types that can be eaten, such as blood clams and green clams (mussel awung), but do not include types that can be eaten but are lying in the sand or bottom of the water, such as lokan and mussels.

Shells are also used to refer to various shells with thick, chalky shells, with a radial pattern on a firm shell. In this sense, green clams are not included and are more accurately called mussels. The closest meaning in English is cockle.

In the narrowest sense, what is meant by shells is blood clams (Anadara granosa), a type of cultivated shellfish commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region and is widely sold in stalls or restaurants selling seafood.
