Samurai were warriors who appeared in Japan's premodern history, who developed into military class leaders during the Edo Period (1603-1867). It wasn't until the Edo Period that the importance of martial skills declined, and many samurai switched professions, such as teachers, artists, or bureaucrats. Japan's feudal period ended in 1868 and the samurai class was abolished a few years later.
