After the successful series of prophetic publications, many people from distant French regions began to contact Nostradamus in order to know what would come their future life through horoscopes. Due to the growing number of clients, he decided to start a project, consisting of writing a book of 1000 redondillas, known as "centuries", which consisted of prophetic verses where he extended the information contained in his previous almanacs.

However, with the intention of avoiding a controversy that led to possible confrontations with the Inquisition, he invented a method to obscure the prophecies of the book by using word games and mixing languages, such as Provencal, Greek, Latin, Italian, Hebrew and Arabic. There are those who maintain that no Nostradamus quatrain has been interpreted before a certain event foreseen by it has been fulfilled.

Most quatrains deal with disasters of various types, including epidemics, earthquakes, wars, floods, murders, droughts, battles and other similar issues. Some prophecies are generic, without specifying places and dates; others seem to be a character or a small group of people. Some refer to a single town or city and others list different populations.
