An integrated prevention platform for increasing safety, eco-efficiency and the

functioning of drivers in the transport sector

The transport sector unfortunately all too often appears in the news in a negative way with serious

traffic accidents involving trucks. The profession of truck driver is also becoming more and more

complex (certificate of professional competence Code 95) and more demanding. For example, a

driver must excel in terms of eco-driving, defensive driving, customer focus, etc. In addition, the

sector is undergoing an aging population and it is difficult to attract new drivers.

SAFE.T is a tool (an app + website) that helps transport companies strive for a more positive image.

Via SAFE.T truck drivers are challenged to improve and excel in three areas: safe driving behavior,

ecologically responsible driving behavior (thus keeping fuel consumption as low as possible) and

general functioning as an employee (which also includes skills such as punctuality, customer-

friendliness, accuracy ...).

SAFE.T first analyzes and evaluates the performance of each driver and makes it available to the

transport company via a website. The website and the app are powered by real vehicle and driving

behavior parameters that are read daily from the on-board computer of the truck. These are further

supplemented with statistics on violations (fines), damage to the vehicle and the general functioning

of the driver. The transport company therefore receives a detailed insight in the strengths and points

for improvement of each driver. They can use these insights to reward drivers for good results or to

raise awareness and train them to be more responsible drivers in order to avoid accidents, to drive

more ecologically and to function as optimally as possible.

To motivate drivers (and to keep them motivated) to work on their skills, SAFE.T uses different game

attributes (such as scores, points, status badges, (group) challenges, progress bars, (group) rankings,

and rewards). We call this "gamification". We work with challenges (e.g. with regard to eco-efficient

driving) that focus on skills (e.g. anticipation and braking) and how these skills are reflected in the

behavior (e.g. roll-out) of an individual driver. The challenges are linked to a stimulating reward

policy, which means that the learning process through SAFE.T requires continuous efforts. The

challenges are offered in multiple levels with increasing complexity. The intention here is that drivers

strive to achieve the highest possible level.

The application of "gamification" for the purpose of sustainable behavioral change among truck

drivers is unique. Experience in other domains (mobility, tourism, health, sport) shows that

gamification leads to higher involvement, a stronger relation and loyalty, and more responsible

behavior. In other words, SAFE.T applies gamification in the transport sector in order to obtain

continuous follow-up and coaching of truck drivers.
