Papaya Phonics for Uganda is an educational app for letter sounds in English and Uganda Local Languages.

Papaya helps primary school teachers and pupils learn the relationships between the letters of written languages and the sounds of spoken language.

Pupils are taught, for example, that the letter “a” represents the sound /a/, and that it is the first letter in words such as “apple”.

Papaya gives primary school teachers and pupils practical basics of phonics skills, including recognizing the letters of the alphabets, learning upper case and lower case letters, alphabet matching, and word building.

The goal of Papaya is to help beginning readers to blend the sound-spelling patterns. It helps pupils/teachers work on practicing the alphabetic principle and helps prepare the pupils to get ready to read.

User Guide:

A: Listening to the Sound

1. Search for and launch Papaya from the list of your Android Application

2. Select the language of your choice from the list of languages in the drop-down menu

3. Tap on the “Intro” to listen to the introductory explanations from the Letter Sounds Expert. Hint: Have your device volume raised up

4. Tap on the letter of your choice to play and listen to the sound, and the word that corresponds to the sound.

B: Practicing the Sound

1. Tap on the microphone button in the Papaya App

2. Say the sound of your choice

3. Tap on the STOP button after you have completed saying the sound

Tap on the PLAY button to listen to your own voice and confirm if the sound was correctly said.
