EyeSim VR (BETA)

EyeSim is an innovative app that creates immersive, educational simulations of visual symptoms. It has been developed as a collaborative project between software engineers, junior doctors and senior eye doctors (ophthalmologists) at St Paul's Eye Unit, Liverpool in order to create an impression of the quality of life of those affected by visual disease (for their families, friends or carers) and in order to cement the understanding of healthcare students and professionals of how these symptoms are experienced.

The app is educational and does not provide an exact display of one persons symptoms. The app can be used as an immersive virtual reality experience along with a head mounted device (e.g google cardboard) or as a non-immersive virtual experience (no head mounted device needed)

For best experience when used with Google Cardboard, you will need a mobile phone with a high resolution display.

How to use:

When the app opens, it will go into virtual reality mode immediately, where two screens appear. There is a small blue oval shaped circle in the middle of each screen which allows you to choose options by pointing toward them and either presseing the screen (in non-immersive mode) or clicking the head-mounted devices button (in inmmersive mode). You will be asked whether you are using google cardboard and if you want to track the phone's rotation. You will then be asked whether you want to use advanced mode, in this mode you will be able to simulate different conditions in each eye (you will find that the image becomes blurry and you have to close one eye at a time to see the simulation.

After clicking on "Conditions" you will be shown the whole variety of conditions available for simulation. Simply choose the condition and severity and click "Select" and the simulation will start.
