ইসলামে শিক্ষার গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম। হেরা গুহায় নবী সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়াসাল্লাম-এর উপর সর্বপ্রথম যে ওহী নাযিল হয় তা হচ্ছে, ‘পড়, তোমার প্রতিপালকের নামে, যিনি সৃষ্টি করেছেন। সৃষ্টি করেছেন মানুষকে জমাট রক্তপিন্ড থেকে।’-সূরা আলাক : ১-২

আল্লাহ তাআলার আদেশে মানুষ যেমন লাভ করেছে জীবনের আলো তেমনি আল্লাহরই নিকট থেকে সে লাভ করেছে ইলমের নূর।  ইলমের মাধ্যমে মানুষ নবজন্ম লাভ করে। আল্লাহর মারিফত যখন মানুষের মধ্যে আসে তখনই সে প্রকৃত মানুষ হয়।

শিক্ষাকে যদি বিশ্লেষণ করা হয় তাহলে দেখা যাবে যে, শিক্ষা মৌলিকভাবে দুই প্রকার : জাগতিক শিক্ষা ও দ্বীনী শিক্ষা। মানুষের জাগতিক প্রয়োজন পূরণের উপযোগী জ্ঞান ও বিদ্যা হচ্ছে জাগতিক শিক্ষা। যেমন বিজ্ঞান, চিকিৎসা, গণিত ইত্যাদি। এই শিক্ষার মূল সূত্র অভিজ্ঞতা। পক্ষান্তরে আল্লাহ তাআলার সন্তুষ্টি-অসন্তুষ্টির জ্ঞান হচ্ছে দ্বীনী শিক্ষা। এই শিক্ষার মূল সূত্র ওহী।

The Prophet of Islam said: “Every Muslim, man and woman, is duty-bound to acquire learning.” This tradition of the Prophet shows the importance of learning in Islam. The importance of learning in Islam can be seen from the prayer given in the following verse of the Quran: “My Lord! Increase me in Knowledge.” (20:114)

Learning is essential for religious and spiritual development. Setting off the process of intellectual development, it brings maturity to one’s thinking. Without learning, one can neither study the sacred books, nor can one be aware of the history of man and the universe. In short, learning brings man from the level of the animals to the level of human beings.
