Set sooner rather than later amid an outsider intrusion of Earth, the amusement puts the player responsible for a first class multinational paramilitary association called XCOM and is entrusted with guarding the Earth. The player orders troops in the field in a progression of turn-based strategic missions; between missions, the player coordinates the innovative work of new advancements from recouped outsider innovation and caught detainees, extends XCOM's base of operations, deals with XCOM's funds, and screens and reacts to outsider movement.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown was widely praised, with a few commentators remarking on the diversion's trouble, replayability, and addictiveness. Various productions, including GameSpy, GameTrailers and Giant Bomb, named it Game of the Year. A continuation of the diversion, titled XCOM 2, was discharged on February 5, 2016 for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux.
