‘আদ জাতির ধ্বংসের প্রায় ৫০০ বছর পরে হযরত ছালেহ (আঃ) কওমে ছামূদ-এর প্রতি নবী হিসাবে প্রেরিত হন। কওমে ‘আদ ও কওমে ছামূদ একই দাদা ‘ইরাম’-এর দু’টি বংশধারার নাম। এদের বংশ পরিচয় ইতিপূর্বে হূদ (আঃ)-এর আলোচনায় বিধৃত হয়েছে। কওমে ছামূদ আরবের উত্তর-পশ্চিম এলাকায় বসবাস করত। তাদের প্রধান শহরের নাম ছিল ‘হিজ্র’ যা শামদেশ অর্থাৎ সিরিয়ার অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল। বর্তমানে একে সাধারণভাবে ‘মাদায়েনে ছালেহ’ বলা হয়ে থাকে। ‘আদ জাতির ধ্বংসের পর ছামূদ জাতি তাদের স্থলাভিষিক্ত হয়। তারাও ‘আদ জাতির মত শক্তিশালী ও বীরের জাতি ছিল। তারা প্রস্তর খোদাই ও স্থাপত্য বিদ্যায় খুবই পারদর্শী ছিল। সমতল ভূমিতে বিশালকায় অট্টালিকা নির্মাণ ছাড়াও পর্বতগাত্র খোদাই করে তারা নানা রূপ প্রকোষ্ঠ নির্মাণ করত। তাদের স্থাপত্যের নিদর্শনাবলী আজও বিদ্যমান রয়েছে। এগুলোর গায়ে ইরামী ও ছামূদী বর্ণমালার শিলালিপি খোদিত রয়েছে। অভিশপ্ত অঞ্চল হওয়ার কারণে এলাকাটি আজও পরিত্যক্ত অবস্থায় রয়েছে। কেউ সেখানে বসবাস করে না।
