Guidelines for Malayalam typing.

1. Single press on a key for getting the character shown on keyboard

2. Press twice/thrice on a key for getting the character under shift position.

3. Long press on a key for getting a popup keyboard and select desired character from it.

For േ Press െ twice, or long-press െ and select from the popup list.

For ൈ Press െ thrice, or long-press െ and select from the popup list.

For ീ Press ി twice, or long-press ി and select from the popup list.

For ൂ Press ു twice, or long-press ു and select from the popup list.

For ഉ Press ു thrice, or long-press ു and select from the popup list.

For ഊ Press ു four times, or long-press ു and select from the popup list.

History of Remington Keyboard Layout Malayalam.

Remington is a US based company which is known for manufacturing the first commercial typewriter. Remington introduced manual typewriter for Malayalam language also. The layout that which Remington introduced in Malayalam typewriter is known as Remington Keyboard Layout Malayalam. Typewriter Malayalam had much limitation as there were no way to include all of the complex characters in available keys. So "koottaksharams" were typed using a virama (chandrakkala) in between.

In 1990 we followed this layout in our Malayalam word processor software “Supermalar” under MS-DOS with some modifications for typing Malayalam "koottaksharams". In 1994 we released another Malayalam software‘THOOLIKA’ for DTP having Remington keyboard layout.

On 26th January 2016 we released the Remington keyboard IME for Android platform.
