Founded in March 1928, the FIR is the Federation responsible for the promotion and development of rugby in Italy and the organization of all national events.

It is part of the member federations of World Rugby. Since 2000, the Italian national rugby team has participated in the 6 Nations, the oldest and most prestigious tournament on the international scene.
