About Expressions d'origine biblique

Expressions having their origin in the biblical texts

Our everyday language is peppered with expressions that we use without always knowing that they have their origin in the Bible.

We suggest you find or discover some expressions mostly from the Bible but also from religious or popular traditions and superstitions found "root" in events or biblical characters.

However, it should be noted that the message of the Bible denounces superstition and invites men instead to place their trust in God:

Do not worry about anything, but, in everything, expose your needs to God. Send him your prayers and petitions, and also thank him. (Philippians 4: 6)

As for the religious traditions that have been added over the centuries, the Bible is sufficient for itself! :

Every word of God is tested ... Add nothing to his words, lest he reprove you and you are found a liar. (Proverbs 30: 5)

You will add nothing to what I am commanding you, and you will not take away from it; but you shall keep the commandments of Jehovah your God, as I command you. (Deuteronomy 4: 2)

The expressions contained in this document are accompanied by the reference of the biblical passage in which it finds its origin (or to which it refers most commonly) followed by a reflection on the original text.

Definitions and reflections committing only the one who wrote them, we recall that the only "gospel word" is that of the original text.
