Yemi Eberechi Alade was born on March 13, 1989, in the state of Abia, Nigeria1. His father James Alade is of Yoruba origin, his mother Helen Uzoma is of Igbo2,3 origin. She is the fifth in a family of seven children. After a childhood in different places according to the assignments of his father, police commissioner, his family moved to Lagos as a teenager2. "I grew up listening to everything from Sunny Adé juju music to Whitney Houston," she says. She studied and pursued graduate studies in geography at the University of Lagos4.

She made her musical debut at age 16 in a group of girls called Noty Spices in 2005, but her music began to become really popular in Nigeria in 2009 following her success in the reality show, Peak Talent Show2,5. A few months later, she released her first single Fimisile on the label Jus' Kiddin6
