The word 'Lakshmi' is derived from the root word 'laksha' which means goal or objective. To take a 'laksha' means to take an aim. The Lakshmi Mantra is recited to know your goal and as a means to fructify that goal. But Lakshmi Mantra is a prayer not only to gain financial prosperity but also to give us the intelligence to enlighten our minds with understanding.

All you need to do is sit comfortably with your eyes open or closed, as you prefer, and repeat the mantra. Generally one would do this in multiples of 108 while counting on a mala, but others prefer to repeat the mantra for a certain period of time. The repetition can be out loud, whispered, or silently. Lakshmi is worshipped daily in Hindu homes and commercial establishments as the goddess of wealth. She is also worshipped as the consort of Vishnu in many temples. The festivals of Diwali and Kojagiri Purnima are celebrated in her honour.
