The Simplest Jurisprudence is considered the same as The Greater Jurisprudence, narrated by Abu Mut'i. It is known as The Simplest Jurisprudence to distinguish it from The Greater Jurisprudence, narrated by Hammad ibn Abi Hanifa from his father. Abu Mut'i is al-Hakam ibn Abdullah al-Balkhi, a companion of Abu Hanifa. He narrated from Abu Awn and Hisham ibn Hassan, from Ahmad ibn Nuh, Khalid ibn Salim al-Saffar, and others. The people of that region learned jurisprudence from him. Abu al-Layth al-Samarqandi explained this treatise: The Greater Jurisprudence, narrated by Abu Mut'i, known as The Simplest Jurisprudence. Abu al-Layth died in 373 AH, and this explanation has been mistakenly attributed to Abu Mansur al-Maturidi. The Treatise on the Simplest Jurisprudence differs in style from the Treatise on the Greater Jurisprudence, as the theological issues it contains are answers to questions posed by the Imam's disciple, Abu Mut'i'. We find in this treatise some detailed evidence for certain theological issues, and the method of finding evidence for theological issues in the Simplest Jurisprudence differs from that presented in the Greater Jurisprudence, as in this treatise he answers Abu Mut'i's questions and provides a comprehensive explanation based on his clarification. Therefore, we find that some theological issues in this treatise are given their full due clarification in response to the student's questions.

Author:

Abu Hanifa al-Nu'man ibn Thabit ibn Marzuban al-Kufi (80-150 AH/699-767 CE) was a Muslim jurist and scholar, the first of the four imams of the Sunnis and the founder of the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence. He is known in the Arab-Islamic heritage as "the Greatest Imam." He was renowned for his vast knowledge and virtuous morals, to the point that Imam al-Shafi'i said of him: "Whoever seeks to delve deeply into jurisprudence is dependent on Abu Hanifa." Abu Hanifa is considered one of the Followers, having met a number of the Companions, including Anas ibn Malik. He was known for his piety, frequent worship, dignity, sincerity, and strength of character. Abu Hanifa relied on six sources for his jurisprudence: the Holy Quran, the Prophetic Sunnah, consensus, analogy, discretion, and custom. Imam Abu Hanifa faced two trials: the first during the Umayyad era, and the second during the Abbasid era. He died in Baghdad in 150 AH and was buried in the Al-Khayzuran Cemetery in Baghdad. The Great Imam Mosque was built next to his grave in 375 AH.
