Definition and Law of Sacrifice

Sacrifice is a certain type of animal that is slaughtered starting on the day of Nahr (10 Dzulhijjah) until the end of the day of Tasyríq (13 Dzulhijjah) with the aim of taqarrub (getting closer to Allah). According to the Shafi'i school of thought, the law of sacrificing is sunnah 'ain for those who do not have a family and sunnah kifáyah for every family member who can afford it.

Sunnah kifáyah is sunnah that is collective in nature. This means that if one of the family members has done it, then it can invalidate the makruh law for the others. Sacrifice can become obligatory if it is dinadzari.
